Naman Dhir: From a Small Town to IPL Stardom, Powered by Family and Perseverance
Naman Dhir, a rising star in Indian cricket, hails from the unassuming town of Faridkot in Punjab. His journey from a humble background to becoming a sought-after name in the IPL is a story of resilience, family support, and hard-earned success. Securing a whopping ₹5.25 crore contract with the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL mega auction, Naman has shown that dreams, no matter how far-fetched they may seem, can come true with the right mix of talent and determination.

A Life-Changing Auction
The 2023 IPL auction was nothing short of a life-changing moment for Naman. Several teams, including Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Punjab Kings, fiercely bid for him. However, Mumbai Indians used their Right to Match (RTM) card to secure him. Speaking about this moment, Naman recalls, “My heart was racing. I had a decent season with MI last year, and while I hoped to get a contract, I never imagined I’d command this kind of money.”
Currently representing Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Naman reflects on his journey. Just a year ago, his dreams of playing professional cricket were hanging by a thread. Having represented Punjab U-16, he faced years of rejection and frustration, as Faridkot, being a second-tier district, didn’t offer many opportunities for young cricketers.
Almost Giving Up
By early 2022, Naman was on the brink of giving up cricket entirely. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities, he started considering a move to Canada, where his sister resides in Edmonton. “Half of Punjab dreams of moving to Canada, and I was no different. My father, however, urged me to give cricket one more year,” Naman shares. That decision proved pivotal. By the end of 2022, he debuted in the Ranji Trophy, and within a year, he found himself in the IPL spotlight.
A Proud Father’s Journey
Naman’s father, Naresh Dhir, has been a pillar of support throughout his journey. Naresh works at a chemist shop in Faridkot, earning a modest ₹10,000 per month for over two decades. Despite financial struggles, he never wavered in his support for Naman’s cricketing aspirations. “When people at Naman’s school criticized me for prioritizing his cricket over academics, I would tell them that one day, they’ll clap for him when they see him hitting sixes on TV,” Naresh reminisces.

For years, Naresh relied on the financial assistance of Naman’s maternal grandfather, Dharam Pal Sethi, a school teacher, to help fund his son’s cricketing dreams. “Cricket is an expensive sport,” Naresh says. “There were times when it seemed impossible, but once Naman started playing Ranji Trophy, things began to improve.”
Personal Losses Amid Triumphs
Naman’s ascent in cricket coincided with two significant personal losses. His grandfather, who had been his biggest cheerleader, passed away soon after his Ranji debut. A year later, he lost his childhood coach, Gagan Sidhu, who had been instrumental in shaping his career. “Gagan paji was like an elder brother to me. He fought for me when I wasn’t selected for Punjab U-19. His death at just 36 left a deep void,” Naman shares. Now, Naman has taken it upon himself to support Gagan’s young family, honoring the bond they shared.
Breaking Barriers
Naman is a trailblazer for Faridkot. He is the first player from the region to represent Punjab at U-16, U-25, and Ranji levels. Now, he’s aiming higher—an India cap. “I hope to continue performing well for Punjab and the IPL. My ultimate dream is to be the first from Faridkot to represent India,” he says.
Lessons from the MI Dressing Room
For Naman, being part of the MI squad has been an inspirational experience. Sharing the dressing room with stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya has been transformative. “The MI team atmosphere is full of self-belief. Rohit bhai once told me, ‘Everyone here has skills, but it’s your temperament that will set you apart,’” Naman recalls.
Looking Ahead
Back in Faridkot, the Dhir family is experiencing newfound fame. Naresh, now a local celebrity, is busy fielding calls and posing for interviews. The family’s modest home, filled with memories, is up for renovation, though Naresh remains torn between preserving it or moving to a new house. “As a father, I’m attached to this house. But I’ll let Naman decide,” Naresh says.
For Naman, the journey has just begun. From the streets of Faridkot to the glamour of the IPL, he embodies the spirit of resilience and ambition. With his eyes set on an Indian cap, Naman is determined to make his mark, proving that with grit and the right support, even the smallest towns can produce the brightest stars.
